• He served in the military Cpl., Co F, 6th Texas Infantry, CSA in 1861 in , , Texas. 33,39 Thomas Benton Shelton died in the Union prison camp at Camp Butler, Illinois, after having been captured at Arkansas Post. Thomas B Shelton was a corporal in Company F, 6th Texas Infantry.

Thomas Shelton was living with his sister and brother-in-law in Atascosa County in 1860. He had at least begun a preemption grant there, and was therefore most likely still in Atascosa County at the beginning of the Civil War.

It is ironic that, having left Illinois with his father in the mid-1840's, he died as a prisoner of war only miles from where he was born.

Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System (NPS) shows that Thomas B Shelton entered the service as a Cpl in his unit, but was a Pvt at the time of his death. His lowered rank was probably a function of the combining of several units during the life of the 6th.

He never married and had no children.

Analysis: William Shelton would have been acting either as his father's attorney, or as his executor, in this sale. It seems more likely to me that the latter would be the case, as Joseph and Mary (Cole) Shelton's children continued to live in the area, and Joseph and Mary disappear from records after this date.
